Overview

St. Joseph's Villa is currently recruiting for a Substitute Teacher to join the Dooley School. Under the direction and guidance of the Principal or Director, the long-term substitute is responsible for providing classroom coverage in the absence of a teacher for an extended period of time. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his/her absence. In the absence of the teacher, this position is responsible for maintaining on-going assessment of students’ grade level and academic needs, designing and implementing appropriate lesson plans, teaching students with special education or alternative education needs. All work is implemented using a systems approach within the psycho-educational model, and using proven and creative teaching techniques.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of academic principles, basic classroom procedure and appropriate intervention procedures with students. A creative, conversational approach is encouraged. Ability to creatively develop and implement a variety of educational programs for the students using material from variety of sources including the internet. Able to appropriately use proprietary software. Ability to structure classroom environment to maximize learning. Excellent time management skills. Knowledge of basic first aid procedures. Knowledge of appropriate methods of behavior management. Participation in a shared leadership environment. Able to be flexible and appropriately handle all classroom expectations. Able to be an effective role model.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains sight and sound supervision of students.
  • Must maintain flexibility as a Children Educational Services (CES) Floater.
  • Provide meaningful instruction to students in assigned classrooms while the regular teacher is absent.
  • Review and implement the regular teacher's routines, procedures, lesson plans, curriculum objectives, classroom management, and instructional strategies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and adhere to all Virginia Department of Education and St. Joseph Villa’s policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment; take all reasonable precautions to protect students, facilities, and materials.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provides, when necessary, instruction in life skills development in coordination with other professional staff.
  • Uses approved behavior management techniques to work with students in crisis.
  • Tracks student attendance and reports absences to Operations Coordinator.
  • Advises Principal or Director of any performance issues in the classroom, whether student or staff-based. Reports any unsafe condition or maintenance matters to Principal or Director.
  • Models appropriate professional behavior and dress.
  • Promotes good community relations and utilizes needed community services.
  • May voluntarily support student athletics, arts, and/or other extracurricular activities.
  • Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement.
  • Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by St. Joseph’s Villa and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree is required. BA/BS degree is preferred.
  • Current and valid Virginia teaching license preferred.
  • One-year classroom or teaching experience in either exceptional education or general education preferred.
  • Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet research, assistive technology, and MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Valid VA driver’s license with excellent driving record.
