Under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Services, the Adaptive Health and Physical Education Instructor is responsible for delivering physical education and health instruction to students with autism and other special needs at the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism, Dooley School, and DCAE (Dooley Center for Alternative Education). The role includes designing adaptive PE programs aligned with Virginia SOLs, 504 Plans, and IEPs, with a focus on developing students’ lifelong fitness, movement skills, and responsible behaviors.

• Provide sight and sound supervision of students in all instructional settings.

• Create individualized lesson plans aligned with Virginia SOLs and student IEPs.

• Adapt teaching methods to meet the physical, behavioral, and developmental needs of each student.

• Collaborate weekly with instructional and clinical staff to assess progress and update documentation (IEP notes, progress reports, report cards).

• Implement approved behavior management techniques and crisis interventions.

• Maintain and report on classroom safety, student performance, and program needs to the Director.

• Participate in campus-wide recreational planning and support student athletics.

• Contribute to staff development, in-service training, and after-school programming.

• Attend mandatory training as required by St. Joseph’s Villa and accrediting bodies.

• Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education or Recreation-related field.

• Adaptive PE Certification (Required).

• Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Health & PE K–12.

• At least 1 year of classroom experience working with special education or alternative education populations.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet tools, and assistive technologies.

• Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record.
