Under the direction and guidance of the Chief Operations Officer, the Director of Education is responsible for planning the strategy for and overseeing the effective operation of academic services at St. Joseph’s Villa. In collaboration with the Clinical Director, this role recommends the academic structure, staffing, fiscal resources, capital expenditures, and services necessary to fulfill the Villa’s strategic goals and mission.
The Director ensures that all educational services meet or exceed standards set by licensing bodies, accrediting agencies, grantors, and internal expectations. This leadership role honors the Villa’s tradition while embracing innovation, diversity, and the strengths that come from an inclusive workforce and client base.
The Director of Education ensures the use of outcome measures to evaluate student success and program quality—across service delivery, finances, environment, documentation, and staff development. The Director must stay abreast of political, funding, regulatory, and community changes to ensure the continued relevancy and viability of education services.
All work is performed within a shared leadership model, in collaboration with other agency services, and within a systems-based framework that prioritizes safety, ethics, and excellence in service.
Directs all academic services to ensure regulatory, accrediting, and internal standards are consistently met.
In collaboration with the Clinical Director, establishes service direction, program philosophies, and standards of quality education and care.
Assesses service effectiveness at least quarterly; identifies and implements corrective actions and continuous improvement strategies.
Participates in the agency’s strategic planning process and leads academic contributions to agency goals.
Identifies opportunities for program expansion and oversees planning, implementation, and monitoring of new or satellite educational services.
Maintains compliance with VAISEF and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requirements.
Ensures all instructional programming aligns with Virginia endorsement standards, SOLs, IEPs, and IAEPs.
Stays current with emerging instructional methodologies and evaluates their applicability to the Villa’s student population.
Maintains up-to-date curricula to meet evolving educational and regulatory requirements.
Collaborates with the Clinical Director to ensure effective use of discipline, coordination of curriculum and treatment plans, and alignment between academic and therapeutic interventions.
Supervises faculty and teaching staff; ensures professional development and supervision structures are in place.
Collaborates on systems for personnel development, training, and performance evaluation.
Mediates disputes involving staff, clients, guardians, service providers, and regulatory agencies.
Ensures teaching supervision supports implementation of the educational model and mission.
Coordinates with Clinical Director to evaluate staffing structures, qualifications, training needs, and resources.
Approves student admissions and discharges in collaboration with the Clinical Director.
Participates in or supports crisis response, reporting serious incidents to CPS/APS as needed and in consultation with the Clinical Director.
Facilitates integrated wraparound support for students by fostering collaboration among internal services.
Ensures fiscal accountability and responsible use of educational resources.
Oversees grant identification and implementation; collaborates on funding proposals.
Approves day-to-day school procedures and ensures compliance with applicable policies and laws.
Builds relationships with public and private agencies to expand resources and advocate for Villa students.
Identifies service gaps in the community and proposes solutions aligned with agency mission.
Negotiates contracts for educational services as needed.
Assumes on-call responsibilities as assigned.
Maintains responsibility for personal professional development and that of academic staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree from an accredited institution with dual endorsements in Special Education - General Curriculum K-12 and Administration & Supervision K-12 required.
Minimum five years of experience in a managerial or leadership role, with preference for experience in special education.
Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet research tools; preferred experience with proprietary or educational software systems.
