Overview

Under the direction and guidance of the Principal, this position is responsible for the on-going assessment of students’ grade level and academic needs, designing and implementing appropriate lesson plans, teaching students with special education or alternative education needs, managing classroom dynamics and behavior, and providing immediate supervision of assigned Assistant Teacher(s) and Counselor(s).

 

All work is implemented using a systems approach within the psycho-educational model, and using proven and creative teaching techniques.   Work is also performed safely, effectively, to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St. Joseph’s Villa’s mission, values, and guiding principles.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Principal in the preparation and organization of school-based remediation and assessment plans.
  • Supervises the completion of Monthlies and of IEP progress reports for all students with IEPs. 
  • Utilizes student performance data to plan for remediation activities
  • Develops long- and short-range objectives that incorporate content-specific curricular standards for remediation
  • Coordinates and plans remediation activities with grade-level or content-area colleagues and with appropriate school personnel
  • Works toward implementation of Continuous School Improvement Plan
  • Assists with planning for and coordinates remediation activities to meet school needs based on assessment data analysis, staff input and administrative recommendations
  • Works with administrative team to implement IEPs, Extended School Year services and coordinates all activities between placing agents and Dooley School.  Coordinates assessment schedules (including benchmark assessments, local, state and national assessments, SOLs, VAAP and pre and post admission assessment of students.

 

Coordinates implementation of remediation objectives

  • Assists school staff in identifying students eligible for remediation services
  • Assists school staff in identifying appropriate remediation services for selected students i.e. Credit Recovery.
  • Encourages student and staff participation in collaboration with administrative team
  • Tracks attendance for students participating in remediation/recovery activities

Reviews and tracks quarterly attendance and academic progress of students being served in remediation, intervention, and tutorial programs to determine progress

 

Serves as Assessment Coordinator…

  • Coordinates and implements school-level testing procedures and protocols for online and paper/pencil national, the state testing program and for locally used assessments
  • Conducts procedural training for all school test examiners and proctors
  • Maintains security of all testing materials while they are in the building
  • Maintain records of student SOL scores for tracking purposes
  • Attends assessment planning trainings

 

Provides data analysis and support with data collection…

  • Assists teachers with data analysis, collection and record keeping associated with student achievement and improvement of instruction to drive remediation planning 
  • Presents information accurately and clearly
  • Reviews benchmark and semester data, practice SOL, and SOL assessment data as appropriate with teachers individually, departmentally and school-wide (including VGLA, VAAP and VSEP assessments)

 

Coordinates assessment of student achievement…

  • Follows district guidelines and timelines for administration of formal and informal assessment instruments
  • Assists in the preparation and administration of ongoing student evaluations
  • Promotes the use of a variety of assessments, in addition to multiple-choice formats, to monitor learning progress (including, but not limited to, assignments and performance tasks, student projects and products, learning inventories and systematic observations— all of which will apply learning.)
  • Maintains and communicates assessment information to profile student progress
  • Keeps appropriate student records
  • Provides indicators of student progress to parents, students, teachers and staff based on an analysis of data

 

Leads utilization of materials and resources…

  • Consults with school staff on the usage of a wide range of supplemental and instructional materials that reflect curriculum standards in order to provide appropriate remediation services
  • Consults effectively with resource personnel concerning appropriate materials and resources
  • Keeps abreast of current educational research and utilizes best practices
  • Collaborates with school staff to evaluate and select informational sources and digital tools based on their appropriateness to specific tasks

 

Other duties…

  • Models appropriate professional behavior and dress
    • Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement
    • Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by St. Joseph’s Villa, and by regulatory and accrediting bodies
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required

Qualifications

  • Current and valid Virginia teaching license (K-12) with Special Education Endorsement
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet research
  • Valid VA driver’s license with excellent driving record.
